Subscribe here<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanlivingreport.com\/?p=509\">Trump\u2019s plan to run a bank<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Welcome to The Logoff:<\/strong> The Trump administration is putting itself in charge of rolling out a new ChatGPT model.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening?<\/strong> On Friday, ChatGPT maker OpenAI announced plans to launch several new AI models, including one called GPT-5.6 Sol, \u201cin the coming weeks.\u201d But at the request of the Trump administration, not everyone will get access at first: Instead, the government will get to sign off on which companies can use the new model, which OpenAI said is its most powerful yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the context?<\/strong> This is the second big AI move the Trump administration has made recently. Earlier in June, it essentially banned Anthropic\u2019s powerful new \u201cfrontier\u201d AI model shortly after the company released it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That model \u2014 originally called \u201cMythos\u201d and released publicly in a more limited version called \u201cFable\u201d \u2014 may have had a significant security flaw (how serious is a little unclear; my colleague Eric Levitz explains more here). But there\u2019s also good reason to think the ban could stem from the administration\u2019s animus against Anthropic.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanlivingreport.com\/?p=507\">Trump wants the US military to be rent-a-cops<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong> As Eric writes, there\u2019s a good case that the federal government should get more involved in AI regulation. And it makes sense to be cautious about frontier models, which are powerful and potentially dangerous. But what the Trump administration is doing isn\u2019t regulation in any traditional sense \u2014 there\u2019s no clear process or universally applied standard at play.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Instead, the administration seems to be making it up as it goes along \u2014 and, in the process, giving itself serious leverage over both AI companies and the firms hoping to use these new tools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>And with that, it\u2019s time to log off\u2026<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hi readers, I hope you\u2019ve been enjoying our little World Cup pop-up feature in this section of the newsletter (fear not \u2014 it will continue).
