The political world is in a frenzy over left-wing challengers\u2019 wins in New York City\u2019s primaries Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Leftists are overjoyed, and think they\u2019re beating back the Democratic establishment. Many on the right and center are horrified, arguing extremists are taking over the party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And yet if you look past deep blue urban areas \u2014 and toward the swing House districts that will actually determine which party wins a majority in November \u2014 a very different story is unfolding, one that could have a much bigger impact on America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Just a few miles north of the city, in the Hudson Valley, lies a GOP-held district that\u2019s one of Democrats\u2019 top targets. The winner of this week\u2019s primary there was Cait Conley, an Army veteran and Biden administration staffer who had the support of much of the Democratic Party\u2019s establishment. She won easily, while the most notable progressive challenger in the race pulled just 15 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That\u2019s just part of a larger pattern throughout the country this year: In the districts with the most competitive general elections ahead, the Democratic establishment has mostly seen its preferred nominees win.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMost of these Democratic candidates in these toss-up, top-tier districts are fairly conventional,\u201d Jacob Rubashkin, the deputy editor of the publication Inside Elections, told me. \u201cThat\u2019s not a judgmental statement on them at all. But it is rarer cases where you\u2019ve got a candidate who breaks the mold a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

There have been about two dozen primaries so far in districts that could swing in November. (The exact count depends on how generous your definition of \u201cswing district\u201d is.) So far, only two of those primaries have resulted in the establishment candidates backed by the DCCC \u2014 the Democrats\u2019 House campaign committee \u2014 losing to a challenger from further left. In fact, national left groups didn\u2019t even participate in many swing district contests at all, preferring to prioritize blue-district battles they had a better chance of winning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So who are Democratic voters nominating? There are a handful of nominees with unusual backgrounds, though they vary ideologically \u2014 a firefighter union leader and smoke jumper lean left, while a farmer and musician are more moderate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But mostly, Democrats\u2019 nominees fall into familiar categories: candidates who have run before and lost, local officeholders, or women with military and national security backgrounds like Conley. (Party leaders heavily recruited that candidate profile in the 2018 midterms.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All this means that, in a year where the energized left is getting all the attention, the Democratic Party\u2019s chances of gaining a House majority depend largely on candidates who are\u2026pretty standard Democrats. And if the party does take over the House, it\u2019s the winners of these districts \u2014 not the far left candidates in the headlines \u2014 who will be most decisive in determining what can actually pass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The \u201cnormal\u201d candidates winning Democratic nominations in key swing districts<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Despite their devastating defeats in 2024, Democrats haven\u2019t engaged in a wholesale rethinking of who they should nominate in swing House districts. In a few contests, the party and its voters are even nominating the same people who have run before and lost, betting that a more favorable political climate will allow them to win this time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In Iowa\u2019s First District, Democratic nominee Christina Bohannan<\/strong>, a law professor and former state representative, lost to Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) in 2022 and 2024. But that latter loss was by .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Former TV anchor Janelle Stelson<\/strong> in Pennsylvania\u2019s 10th District is another repeat nominee (she lost by about 5,000 votes in 2024). And, though she hasn\u2019t won her primary yet, former Rep. Elaine Luria<\/strong>, a Navy veteran first elected in 2018, who lost in 2022, is trying to reclaim her old seat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Other nominees are trying to make the jump from state or local politics to Congress \u2014 like San Diego city council member Marni von Wilpert<\/strong> (CA-48), Scranton, Pennsylvania, mayor Paige Cognetti <\/strong>(PA-08), Iowa state Rep. Lindsay James <\/strong>(IA-02), and Iowa state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott<\/strong> (IA-03).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There\u2019s a group of female military veterans who call themselves the \u201cHellcats\u201d running, of which three have locked up their nominations so far \u2013 the aforementioned Cait Conley<\/strong> (NY-17), Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett <\/strong>(NJ-07), and Marine veteran JoAnna Mendoza <\/strong>(AZ-06). (Arizona\u2019s primary is in July, but Mendoza is running unopposed.)<\/p>\n

These candidates aren\u2019t bomb-throwing provocateurs \u2014 but for the most part, they aren\u2019t left-punching centrists, either. They haven\u2019t gotten many national headlines, which may be by design. \u201cAs a House candidate you don\u2019t really wanna be noisy if you\u2019re running in a Republican district,\u201d said Rubashkin. That is: it isn\u2019t helpful for the Eye of Sauron \u2014 or Fox News \u2014 to be trained on you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The more against-the-grain candidates<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Yet there are other nominees who have more unusual backgrounds or political profiles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Some \u2014 like farmer Jamie Ager <\/strong>(NC-11), musician Bobby Pulido<\/strong> (TX-15), and sheriff\u2019s deputy Johnny Garcia <\/strong>(TX-35) \u2014 are more moderate. Others, like smoke jumper Sam Forstag<\/strong> (MT-01), are more progressive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In a few contested primaries, there\u2019s been a surprising trend where Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and the centrist Blue Dog Democrats have backed the same candidates \u2014 generally, because both like their populist credentials. That happened for firefighter union leader Bob Brooks<\/strong> (PA-07) and ironworker Brian Poindexter <\/strong>(OH-07). Bernie and the Blue Dogs are also both backing Rebecca Cooke<\/strong>, who grew up on her family\u2019s dairy farm, in the August primary for Wisconsin\u2019s Third District.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThese are people trying to run in that more populist lane and bridge the ideological divide,\u201d says Erin Covey, the House editor for the Cook Political Report. \u201cThe Blue Dog brand has evolved a lot \u2014 they\u2019re looking for candidates who don\u2019t have elite backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Finally, there are the outliers: Matt Dunlap<\/strong> (ME-02) and Randy Villegas<\/strong> (CA-22) are both progressive challengers who defeated DCCC-backed favorites, in classic \u201cinsurgent versus the establishment\u201d fashion. But so far, their stories are not typical.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Will conventional candidates be enough to win in November?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Taken together, the Democratic Party is essentially betting that it doesn\u2019t have to change much to take back the House \u2014 that the party can run similar types of candidates as in the past, and win because of a national backlash over affordability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThese candidates are not making a ton of time talking about Trump on the trail,\u201d Covey says. Their messaging, for the most part, is \u201call about lowering costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The risk is that they might be underestimating just how damaged the Democratic Party brand is in these swing districts. After all, their voters elected Republicans last time around.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to be glib, but I do think the biggest challenge to any Democrat running in a competitive district is simply that they\u2019re a Democrat,\u201d Rubashkin said. \u201cThe last four to five years of national coverage of the party under Biden and Harris has been so negative that there\u2019s a cloud over everyone with a D next to their name.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But Rubashkin is skeptical that the party needs more loud centrists \u2014 or loud leftists \u2014 to win swing districts. \u201cNot everyone is going to have the ability and inclination to drive national news cycles of how they\u2019re not like other Democrats. And I don\u2019t think it\u2019s necessary to do that to win these races.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So despite all the sturm und drang about leftists winning a few blue district primaries \u2014 and the high-profile Maine and Michigan Senate races \u2014 the Democratic establishment is still very much getting the candidates they want in the battle for the House. If they win, that portends a Congress in which the lightning-rod New York newcomers are still outliers, and the institutional party still has the majority-making seats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And in the meantime, the party\u2019s success in November, or its failure, will rest on the establishment \u2014 because they\u2019ve overwhelmingly gotten the candidates they want.<\/p>\n
