Thirteen more drowned in swimming accidents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>French authorities on Monday placed half the country \u2014 49 of the country\u2019s 96 mainland departments \u2014 on a level 1 danger-to-life warning, urging 35 million people to exercise \u201cabsolute vigilance,\u201d avoid strenuous exertion, and stay out of direct sun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A further six departments will be added to the red list on Tuesday, with 35 others remaining on a level 2 orange alert. <em>\u201c<\/em>Very high temperatures are setting in for the long term across the country,\u201d said the national weather service, M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It said temperatures throughout western and central France were likely to exceed 40\u00b0C from Monday afternoon \u2014 hitting 43\u00b0C in Bordeaux, 41\u00b0C in Limoges, 40\u00b0C in Toulouse and Tours and 39\u00b0C in Paris \u2014 and would continue rising until the end of the week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nighttime lows are also likely to be far higher than normal until at least Friday, M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France said, with the minimum temperatures of about 25\u00b0C recorded in several towns and cities overnight on Sunday already setting all-time records.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>France\u2019s so-called national heat index, an average of the day and nighttime highs measured at 30 weather stations around the country, is expected to hit its highest ever level on Monday or Tuesday, the forecaster said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>More than 1,300 schools were closed nationwide on Monday, while another 4,000 rescheduled classes to allow pupils to leave early. One in 10 regional train services around Paris were cancelled amid fears for rolling stock and tracks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMany people are going to suffer, because bodies suffer from an accumulation of high temperatures,\u201d said St\u00e9phanie Rist, France\u2019s health minister, visiting a Paris hospital on Monday. We really don\u2019t know when temperatures will start falling,\u201d Rist later told French television.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>France went ahead with its annual street music festival, the F\u00eate de la Musique, on Sunday, although some local authorities called it off altogether, and others ran only evening events. Alcohol restrictions were imposed in many areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Spain declared its first official heatwave of the year from Sunday until Wednesday, with temperatures forecast to reach 44\u00b0C in some areas. A public screening in Madrid of the national football team\u2019s World Cup match against Saudi Arabia was cancelled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The state weather service, Aemet, warned on Sunday of \u201cextremely high\u201d day and night temperatures and issued a red alert for the northern Basque region, where the city of San Sebasti\u00e1n was forecast to hit 40\u00b0C, more than double the seasonal average.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, and in some northern areas \u200beven more than 10 degrees above average,\u201d said Rub\u00e9n del Campo, a spokesperson for the meteorological agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In Germany, organisers suspended the final of the Berlin Open tennis tournament and cleared everyone out of the event location because of severe thunderstorms as temperatures in the German capital topped 30\u00b0C over the weekend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Temperatures in Belgium \u2014 already past 30\u00b0C on Sunday \u2014 would be \u201cthe hottest ever recorded,\u201d said David Dehenauw, the head of forecasting at the IRM weather institute. Some rush-hour trains were cancelled to limit the risk of breakdowns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In the UK, the Met Office national weather service issued an \u201cextreme heat\u201d warning for much of southern England and parts of Wales until Thursday, predicting temperatures of up to 39\u00b0C.
